9.Take a walk during lunch, a planning period, or after school. During your walk, don't think about the things you have to do.

10.Steer clear of the coffee pot in the faculty room. Too much caffeine can make you nervous and irritable.

11.Keep in mind that no matter what colleagues, your principal, students, or parents think or say, you're basically a good teacher who can't please all the people all the time.

12.Don't listen to the rumors that fly around the school.

13.Give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing for five minutes a day — and not feel guilty about it.

14.Just say no. Politely refuse to take on more projects than you can handle, even if a colleague, your principal, or a parent asks you to.

15.Be grateful to have a meaningful job.

How to Initiate, Lead and Conclude a Group Discussion (GD)?

Group Discussion (GD) is an essential part of B-School selection process. A GD is conducted to test various managerial skills such as communication, leadership, rational, analytical, interpersonal, etc. There are many ways in which you can make your performance impressive and effective in a GD.

So, how do you ensure that the panellists notice you during a Group Discussion? Initiating a GD is a great move towards grabbing the attention of the panellists. But be careful of what you speak while beginning a GD, as that may make or break your chances of getting through to the Personal Interview round. Once the topic is announced, take a moment to absorb the topic of GD and start by saying something relevant to the topic. Then initiate the GD as most of your fellow members would probably be trying to understand the topic too.

How and Why to Initiate a GD?
1. By beginning a Group Discussion, you not only seize an opportunity to speak but also you grab everybody’s attention.
2. By initiating a GD you will get maximum uninterrupted time to present your views and skills to the examiner as other participants are still busy in understanding the topic.
3. Try to make an impression through your content and communication skills while beginning a GD. 
4. While initiating a Group Discussion, you should not stammer or quote wrong facts.
5. You should initiate a GD only if you have properly understood the topic and have some knowledge about it.
6. Try to give right direction to a GD by giving logical points.
7. If you are beginning a GD, try to cover all the relevant points and present them clearly.
8. Initiate a GD by giving a quote, definition, question, facts, figures and statistics, shocking statement, short story or general statement.
9. Do not take much time after beginning a GD as it will give an impression that you initiated a GD for sake of just starting it.
If you have not initiated the GD, don’t lose heart. You can still enter the GD and make your presence felt.

How to Enter a GD midway?
1. Identify a way to enter a Group Discussion, as every GD has its highs and lows. Try to enter a GD during low times.
2. Try to enter the GD after a participant has made his point but do not take much time.
3. Try to enter a Group Discussion by making a supportive or appreciating statement in favour of the last point made as people will think you are favouring them and they will let you speak.
It takes great talent to speak sense continuously and hold everyone’s attention. Once you have made a breakthrough in the GD, try to steer the conversation or discussion towards a goal or some sort of conclusion.

How to Lead or Carry on a GD?
1. Try to bring new ideas in a GD.
2. You can creatively modify ideas presented by others and develop them during the GD.
3. Try to gain support from other participants of the Group Discussion through your body language, eye contact and oral etiquette.
4. Find out if the Group Discussion is on track or not. If a GD is going off track, try to bring it back on the topic.
This is your last chance to win brownie points. Concluding a GD is as important as the beginning as it showcases your potential to assimilate and evaluate before taking any decision, which is a key requisite of a successful manager.

How to Conclude a GD?
1. You should summarise all points discussed in a Group Discussion in nutshell.
2. While concluding a GD, avoid raising new points.
3. Do not emphasise on your individual viewpoint while summarising a GD.
4. Keep the conclusion of a GD concise.
5. While summarising a GD, include all important points that came out during the group discussion.
6. Avoid emphasis on one aspect of the Group Discussion.
7. If someone has concluded the Group Discussion, do not contradict unless the conclusion has flaws or you have vital point to add.
During a GD, you need to take up different and important task roles to make the Group Discussion more effective and productive. These task roles in a GD can be positive as well as negative. You should avoid taking up negative task roles in a GD.   

Positive Task Roles in a GD
1. Initiator – Starting a GD, giving definitions and suggesting and introducing new ideas.
2. Information seeker – In a GD, gather and solicit information from others.
3. Information giver – During GD share information and facts. 
4. Procedure facilitator – Lead a GD by keeping track of the discussion.     
5. Opinion seeker - Ask other participants of a GD for their opinion.
6. Opinion giver – Give your opinion in a GD on statement given by the other participant.
7. Clarifier – Clarifying all the ideas and opinions discussed during a GD.
8. Social Supporter – Giving support to ideas of all participants of a GD.  
9. Tension Reliever – Presenting and discussing problem on broad prospective.     
10. Energizer – Encouraging other participants to explore some new ideas during a GD.
11. Compromiser – Creating harmony between different opinions by giving compromising solution.    
12. Gatekeeper – Involving other participants in the GD by asking for their opinion   
13. Summarizer – Summarising or concluding a GD by including all important points discussed during a GD.

Negative Task Roles in a GD
1. Disgruntled non-participant – Someone who doesn’t contribute to the GD
2. Attacker -  Someone who aggressively disapproves opinion of other participants of a GD

Kids in rural India learn more from tuitions than schools: Annual status of education report

The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), based on a survey covering about six lakh children in 567 districts of rural India, has said tuition-going students were much more clear with their arithmetic concepts.

"The influence of additional inputs in the form of tuition on the children's ability to read or do arithmetic is clear. Whether enrolled in government school or private school, children receiving this addition support have better learning outcomes than those who do not," it said.
The report also revealed that enrolment in private schools had jumped by 10 per cent in the last three years.

It said that in 2012, of all the children enrolled in standard I to VIII, close to 45 per cent were going to private schools or taking to private tuitions.
Enrollment among the 6-14 age group in private schools has gone up from 18.7 per cent in 2006 to 28.3 per cent in 2012, the report said while raising a big question mark on the quality outcomes especially in the RTE regime.

It said if the current trend of enrolment in private school continues, "then by 2018 India may have 50 per cent children attending private schools even in rural areas".

In fact, more than 40 per cent of the children in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Meghalaya were enrolled in private schools, it said. In Kerala and Manipur, the figure was more than 60 per cent.

Three Nashik youths develop software for women safety

Three software engineers from Nashik have developed an application which would ensure help for women in trouble. The software was developed on the backdrop of the rising incidences of crime against women, can be downloaded on Android mobile handsets for free.

Unlike the helpline numbers, the advantage of this software is in its one-touch facility that was developed keeping in mind the urgency of the situation. Anoop Unnikrishanan (24), Gunwant Battashe (23), engineer and graphic designer Jayesh Bankar (23) developed the first version of the software a fortnight back in a span of eight days and the second version in the next eight days.

"We developed the second version on January 7 and on January 14, we gave a demonstration to the Commissioner of Police Kulwant Kumar Sarangal to get his views on it. He was very pleased with it," informed Anoop about the software titled, 'Me against rape.'

The user has to set a text for messaging a known person or a relative for help, like 'I am in trouble'. There is a facility for two phone numbers to be saved for help - one for messaging and the second for calling. "The numbers for call contact and message contact could be the same or different as the user wishes to store. There is a 'help' button on the screen of the mobile phone which has the message contact and call contact options on it. When in trouble the lady can press this button and the pre-stored helpline numbers for call or message. The message will automatically get sent to the contact person registered or the call will be forwarded, depending upon the option chosen," said the trio.

They said that not all abuse is physical and that is why they also have the option of audio recording for verbal abuse that can be recorded stealthily and can be produced whenever necessary. Besides, the facility of Google map link in Android has also helped them to create an option for recording the location of the person.

"Every 10 minutes, the latitude, longitude and location of the person gets logged. This can be provided as evidence later. The emergency contact person cannot see these records, so we are also trying to develop a software to facilitate the same," said the trio.

Facebook's search tool could be big money maker

If users take to Facebook's new search tool, the social network could be in line to haul in a whole lot of advertising dollars, say industry analysts.

The company announced Graph Search, a tool designed to enable users to search for information on the Facebook platform. Not a stand-alone search engine like Google Search or Microsoft Bing, Graph Search is focused on culling data from users' friends and friends of friends.

For instance, if you want to know the best hybrid bicycle under $500, or the the best cake bakery in your city, Graph Search , which is available now, will see what your social network has had to say about it.

One advantage of giving users a better search service on the social network is that it could keeps people on the site longer. If users don't have to leave Facebook and go to Google's site to get a question answered, then Facebook is rewarded with more eyeball time.
If Graph Search is successful, it could pay off in a big way for Facebook, as well..

Facebook app to offer free phone calls

FACEBOOK users can now phone each other for free with a new Skype-like feature being introduced to the network’s Messenger mobile app. Facebook is testing the new "free call" feature that will allow American users to phone each other through the app over a wi-fi connection, avoiding carrier call charges.
Voice calls can only be made to other Facebook users who also have the free-call enabled Messenger installed on their iPhone. Users cannot call a Facebook friend who is logged in through the website, or call a landline or other mobile phone.
The test is currently limited to iPhone users in the US, with a spokesperson for Facebook Australia saying there was no news about the feature being rolled out to other countries.
However a Facebook spokesman in the UK told the BBC the company was expected to expand the feature overseas, as well as to include it in apps for other operating systems.
